The Emotional Freedom Technique

The Emotional Freedom Technique, or EFT, for short, is quickly becoming one of the fastest growing therapies in the UK. It has had a number of television appearances recently and word is spreading fast that this is such a simple, but extremely effective technique.

I first heard about EFT from one of my Reiki clients, she loaned me a book and I then read it cover to cover the same day. This technique, which was new to me, sounded fascinating, unbelievable, but fascinating! I continued to research by going on the internet (www.emofree.com is the site I highly recommend) and found even more case studies that sounded too good to be true. Because I have had so many amazing experiences with healing work, I was more open to learning about EFT.  Like Reiki, EFT works upon the meridian system, the bodies natural energy lines. By tapping on a set sequence of potent points EFT balances meridian flow and promotes relief from both emotional and physical pain. Sounds easy eh? Well the good news is that yes it is!

I have been using EFT in my practice for several years now , and I have had the privilege of helping people over come many problems, things like:

stress, tension,
headaches, (including migraine)
fears, (spiders, flying, driving)
phobias (claustrophobia, the dentist!)
anxiety, panic attacks,
physical pain in general
addictions (e.g. smoking)
poor self image, confidence and self-esteem
dealing with things from the past
relationship issues
negative emotions such as guilt, hurt, pain
bereavement

And the exciting thing is that EFT seems not to have any boundaries, the list above is simply non-exhaustive, basically whatever thoughts, feelings, emotions that you hold that you are ready to let go of, you can. NO MATTER HOW LONG YOU HAVE HAD THEM!

EFT (like any therapy) is not guaranteed  to work 100% of the time, but I have found that just by 'giving it a go' it has changed the lives of many of my clients, and myself! Imagine living with emotional freedom!

When I was in Canada I used to lay in bed listening to a woodpecker – ah blissful you may think; well actually it was far from blissful when at five a.m. the dumb bird used to drill into the metal part of a telegraph pole! I think he could see his reflection?! If only I had known about tapping then to compensate for the woodpeckers raucous taps!

"The choices we make in the present time are influenced by the traumas and joys we have experienced in the past. Choices we make today, of course, create our future. If we can defuse the traumas from the past and reinforce the joys, we’ll be making choices which create the kind of future that we really want to have." Stokes & Whiteside

EFT can help to dissolve those past traumas, to allow us to live without the ‘coping mechanisms’ that are often adopted. We can be more in the moment, in the joy of now and allow the negative to dissolve with the taps. With EFT as a tool you have no excuses... you simply have to live the life you want!

EFT was developed by Stanford Engineer Gary Craig in the United States as a streamlined version of Psychotherapist Dr. Roger Callahan’s Thought Field Therapy. Therapists the world over have been using Thought Field Therapy for 20 years and it is recognised as an established and effective treatment method. However, training is complex and the treatment process itself is not so easily learned for self-help use. The unique contribution of Gary Craig was to revise the process in order that anyone could learn to use it for themselves often achieving outstanding results within minutes of learning the basic technique.

How does it work? Many ancient therapeutic texts will cite a disruption or stagnation in the flow of vital energy (chi, prana or bio-energy) to be the root cause of many physical or emotional ailments.

The discovery statement upon which EFT and other energy therapies rest states much the same: "the cause of all negative emotions in a disruption in the body’s energy system".

Once that disruption is cleared then so are the related emotional or physical symptoms. With EFT this is a surprisingly simple process and involves quite simply tapping on a sequence of key meridian points whilst tuned in to the problem at hand. Whether that problem is anger, despondency or a stiff shoulder the basic procedure is always the same.

So here's what some other therapists say about EFT: It's

"FAST - the basic technique takes from 30 seconds to 5 minutes. Even the busiest of people can fit EFT into their schedule.

EFFECTIVE - it works - if you learn it well and use it correctly you will see results.

PAINLESS - there is no discomfort with EFT only relief.

CONVENIENT - EFT is portable and simple. It can be used anywhere without need for tools or equipment.

EASY - easy to learn and easy to use. EFT is the ultimate DIY technique.

SAFE - there are no negative side effects. EFT can be used on anyone from infants to the elderly or seriously ill with no fear of harm."

"The re-energising and re-vitalising action of EFT, together with it’s remarkable ability to lower stress levels, allows the user to relax and function to the best of his or her ability. In addition, physical illnesses or injuries will often begin to heal faster."

"These groundbreaking techniques are gentle, rapid and extremely effective. It is not uncommon for chronic pain to be considerably reduced in less than half an hour. Similarly, psychological pain such as anxiety, depression and addictions, caused by traumatic incidents or childhood experiences, can often be relieved fully in a single session."

"The most remarkable aspect of EFT for many users is the fact that it is designed so that you can do it for yourself once you’ve learned the techniques.  This means that you can enjoy the benefits of EFT™ anywhere, and that you can use it on any problem you wish."
