Why Meditation?
Meditation is a way of connecting yourself to your ‘true- self’ – that part of you which is detached from ego, fears, aches, worries etc. It is that part of you that is wise, loving and peaceful. Within the stress of modern day living, many of us become detached from our true selves, it becomes easy to lose our sense of purpose. Meditation is a way of checking in with yourself. How many times a week do you ask other people how they are feeling? How many times do you ask yourself?
One of the most popular form of meditation is visualisation. Please note that it is not necessary to be a ‘visual’ person in order to benefit from this. For some people it is very natural to close their eyes and ‘see’ – others, myself included, tend to ‘feel’ what is happening in a visualisation, this is just as good!
Getting into a habit of reular meditation can often be challenging, there may be times when you become sleepy, distracted or bored! Please work through these times. Also when you begin to meditate your mind is often extremely busy. It is also common to feel a lot of resistance to meditation practice, again, try and work through this – you feel like this because you need to meditate!
Tips for meditation:
*Sitting is best for meditation, ideally with your limbs uncrossed, your back straight and your feet touching the floor.
*If meditating in a group don’t worry about coughing of fidgeting, this will cause you stress! Others in the room will be able to focus on their meditation regardless of background noise. (I have meditated in Heathrow airport!)
*If following a guided meditation, don’t feel that you have to follow everything the 'leader' suggests, especially during a visualisation. If you want to ‘do you own thing’ this is o.k.
*Drinking water before and after a meditation helps the healing process, toxins are literally flushed from your body.
*If you find that your mind is cluttered with thoughts accept this – acknowledge them and then focus back on what the exercise is. Stressing out about a busy mind in meditation would defeat the object of meditating!
*If you feel yourself falling asleep try and give yourself a running commentary of what is happening.
* Finally – just go with the flow!
